From schematic design to bid-ready PS&E — roadway, Complete Streets, and transportation projects built on 25+ years of Texas experience with TxDOT, the City of San Antonio, and Bexar County.
GKW designs roadway, intersection, and corridor projects for TxDOT, the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, VIA Metropolitan Transit, and private developers — in traditional and design-build delivery, with traffic engineering and field data handled in-house.
Horizontal and vertical alignment, plan and profile development, typical sections, cross-sections, and intersection geometry — designed to TxDOT standards and City and County requirements.
Complete plans, specifications, and estimates ready to bid — plus bid-phase help and construction-phase services such as RFI responses, change orders, and closeout.
Road diets, bike lanes, widened sidewalks, ADA ramps, transit stops, and crosswalks — balanced for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and buses.
Corridor and subarea planning, feasibility studies, and schematic design that test options early — before right-of-way, cost, and schedule are locked in.
Signing and pavement marking plans, channelization, overhead sign structures, signal design, and traffic control plans that keep roads open and safe during construction.
Roadway hydraulic design, utility engineering, and constructability review — so conflicts are found on paper, not in the field.
GKW is TxDOT-precertified across more than 20 engineering categories, including Roadway Design, Route Studies & Schematic Design, Constructability Review, and Roadway Hydraulic Design, supporting the firm's qualifications for TxDOT and other transportation assignments throughout Texas.
GKW was civil engineering subconsultant to the Williams Brothers/Jacobs design-build team on San Antonio's first major design-build highway project for the Alamo RMA. On the roughly 8-mile corridor, GKW designed pavement markings, overhead signs and supports, traffic signal upgrades, and pedestrian signals — on an accelerated schedule. The project was delivered ahead of schedule.
As Prime Consultant under the City of San Antonio's 2017–2022 Bond Program, GKW redesigned the N. Flores St. and Fredericksburg Rd. intersection using Complete Streets and Vision Zero principles — with bus queue jump lanes, a channelized right-turn lane, bike boxes, and a redesigned signal system. Construction was completed in February 2021.
GKW led feasibility, a 3-D visualization, and a full PS&E set for the 1,600-foot corridor, reconfiguring four lanes to three with a center turn lane and widening sidewalks from as little as 4 feet to 12 feet — while coordinating with SARA, VIA, the historic district, and SAWS utility replacement.
GKW developed contract plans for phasing, traffic control, three signalized intersections, signing, and pavement markings on this 1.77-mile widening to a three-lane urban section with bike lanes, sidewalks, retaining walls, and 3,300 LF of drainage with 42 inlets.
GKW delivered complete PS&E plans and then construction-phase services for the reconstruction and widening of about 1,100 linear feet of Padre Drive — one team from design through closeout. Construction was completed in September 2021.
On this roughly 1-mile City of San Antonio Bond Program reconstruction, GKW handled alignment review, intersection geometry, ADA pedestrian ramps, signing and pavement markings, and coordination to keep access open for residents and businesses.
